Today's focus: Sprint, RIM team up for new BlackBerry

By Keith Shaw

Sprint last week announced availability of its Sprint PCS Smart
Device - a BlackBerry 7250 model that will work on Sprint's PCS
network. The device is being sold through Sprint's business
sales channels and can be used with either the BlackBerry
Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Internet Service.

The device includes wireless e-mail, text messaging, Internet
access, an organizer and support for accessing corporate data
applications, Research in Motion (RIM) says.

The wireless phone includes 32M-bytes of flash memory, 4M-bytes
of SRAM, has a backlit keypad, and uses built-in Bluetooth to
support Bluetooth-enabled headsets and hands-free car kits.
Unfortunately, the device's Bluetooth capabilities does not
support a dial-up network functionality, which means users won't
be able to use the 7250 to bridge a network connection between
the phone and a laptop.

In order to do that, you would have to buy a Sprint Treo 650,
which recently provided a software update (
<http://www.networkworld.com/nlmobile1417> ) that enables
Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking, which allows the Treo 650 to act
as a modem when paired up with a Bluetooth-enabled laptop. More
information about this can be found at
<http://www.networkworld.com/nlmobile2880>

OK, back to the 7250 device. It will connect to Sprint's
CDMA-based networks on two bands - 1900 MHz and 800 MHz - and
weights 4.9 oz. It has a 2.25- by 1.5-inch color display that
supports more than 65,000 colors, and offers up to 3.3 hours of
talk time when in digital mode, Sprint says.

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server software can integrate with
Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino and Novell's GroupWise platforms, RIM
says. For individuals and others who don't want to connect to
those systems, the BlackBerry Internet Service lets users access
up to 10 e-mail accounts from a single device.

The Sprint version of the 7250 will cost $489.99 (before rebates
and other incentives - the Web site currently lists the price at
$241.99). More details are available at
<http://www.sprint.com/blackberry7250>. Additional applications
for the Sprint 7250 device will be offered by Handango through a
special Web site ( <http://sprint.handango.com/> ).
